Computing Intent
The Computing curriculum enables us to understand computer systems and how they relate to the world around us. We develop an understanding of how computers are connected together and the hardware required. We learn the language of code and the importance of secure data.
KS3
We aim to provide students with a good overview of the subject, enabling them to make an informed decision on choosing it as a GCSE. Computing lessons are embedded across the curriculum in Year 7 and 8 but taught as a distinct subject in Year 9. Students will develop an understanding of: Computer systems, Computational thinking, algorithms and programming as part of an Entry Level GCSE in Computer Science.
KS4
We offer 2 pathways at KS4: Firstly, 9-1 GCSE Computer Science which is part of the English baccalaureates. This focus heavily on programming, hardware and software which supports the functions of computing. This gives students an opportunity to develop a good foundation in all areas of computing and learn and develop skills in programming languages.
Secondly, we offer a course a BTEC in Digital Information Technology which provides students with technical knowledge and skills of data management, data interpretation, data presentation and data protection.
Both courses setting students up for both further education and work.
KS5 : Year 12/13
At Level 3 we offer a National Diploma in Computer Science (Equivalent in size to two A Levels.) and a BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Computing (Equivalent in size to one A Level). Students taking the Diploma cover the same units as the Extended Certificate but then complete an extra six units. Both the courses give the students an opportunity to look at key areas of Computing and skills that will support them in further studies at university in Computing or most other fields. Skills are also taught that support students going in to work.
We also offer a Level 2 Technical Certificate in IT Support for those students who have a keen interest in the subject but do not yet meet entry requirements of a level 3 course. In this 1 year course students have an opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge, technical and practical skills, and to apply these skills in work-related environments.
